Robert R. Thousand, Jr., D.D.S.
     
 


Dr. Robert Thousand, Jr. was born in St. Louis, Missouri were he grew up and attended high school at Ritenour High School upon graduation of high school he attended the University of Missouri and married his high school sweetheart and girl next door, Jane.  His second year of college they had a son Robert Thousand III (Bobby) in the middle of college he was recruited by the Army and became a Drill Sergeant during the Vietnam Era.  He continued his military experience via the US Army reserves and was assigned into a military MASH Unit where he was served on a dental/medical team.  During that time Dr. Thousand was also recruited to the US Army Rifle Team traveling throughout the United States participating in sharp shooting competition along with his brother Dr. William Dennis Thousand who consequently became a dentist and is currently practicing in Springfield, Missouri. 

Upon returning from the Army he attended college at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri and worked evenings at Monsanto Chemical Company.  After the year of part time college during the day and full time work at night Robert and Jane decided it would take too many years to graduate from college, therefore they moved to the campus of the Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri were he graduated with a double degree in Biology and Chemistry with a minor in Physics and Mathematics.  Prior to graduation from college, Robert was accepted to the University of Missouri College of Dentistry in Kansas City, Missouri. 

After excelling in his first semester in dental school at the University of Missouri College of Dentistry in Kansas City, Missouri he was awarded a four year scholarship to the University of Missouri Dental School Dr. Thousand completed all his academics and clinical requirements in 3 years instead of four and was offered to graduate a year early.  Dr. Thousand elected to stay the full four years to obtain more surgical experience rather then graduating a year early and worked in the Oral Surgery department his last year.  During the summers of dental school Dr. Thousand worked on an American Indian Reservation with his wife and son treating less fortunate American Indian children’s dental needs as a dentist in the Public Health Clinic.  Upon graduation from dental school Dr. Thousand opened a private practice in general dentistry in Lincoln, Kansas a town of 1,500 people.  He and another dentist were the only two dentists in the whole county the size of St Johns County Florida.  He and his family lived in a small town eight miles away consisting of seven houses.   Kansas was so flat they could see the only stop light in the town he practiced in, Lincoln 8 miles across the wheat fields. 

 
     


After three years of practice in general dentistry Dr. Thousand was one of two people from the United States accepted to the University of Florida Department of Periodontology at Shands.  He continued his education and moved his family to Gainesville, Florida.  He completed a two year surgical residency in Periodontics at the University of Florida.

During the two years of surgical training in Periodontics Dr. Thousand did research to develop the Florida Probe and published the results of his study in the Journal of Periodontology.  The Florida Probe is now a working machine utilized in many practices throughout the world. 

Upon graduation of the University of Florida Department of Periodontology Dr. Thousand opened a practice specializing in the treatment of periodontal disease in St. Augustine and Palatka Florida were he has been practicing for over twenty-five years. Dr. Thousand has twenty-five years of experience in dental implantology periodontics as it relates to general dentistry.   Dr. Thousand works closely with your general dentist to give you the best possible care.

Dr. Thousand has worked with the general dentists in St. Johns, Putnam and Flagler Counties for the past twenty-five years.  Dr. Thousand is a registered dental provider for the State of Florida and lectures to the general dentists on a regular basis providing them with necessary continuing education requirements.  Dr. Thousand and his wife Jane of thirty-seven years have been active members in St Johns County.  Their son, Dr. Robert Thousand III following his fathers profession is currently practicing in St. Augustine, Florida as a specialist in Endodontics (root canals).

Dr. Thousand and Jane enjoy fishing, blue water cruising and sailing and are both private pilots.

Dr. Thousand is currently an active member in the following organizations:  Past President of the St Augustine Dental Society, American Academy of Periodontics (AAP), Southern Academy of Periodontics (SAP), Florida Academy of Periodontics (FAP).
